Our new life in Christ – Perfect and Holy (Romans 6:19)

I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.

For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.  But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.  For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:19-23

Paul explains our new life in Christ with an illustration of slavery-  you decide if you want to be ruled over by sin or ruled over by righteous living. We each chose to be either a slave to sin , which leads to death,  or a slave to righteous living in Christ which leads to eternal life.

But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct
1 Peter 1:16

It seems this new life of being born again begins with baptism, it is the spark that makes everything move into place. Acts 5:32 says the Holy Spirit is given to those who obey. This act of Baptism plus obedience with a pure heart of sincere love of the brethren (1 Peter 1:22-24) is the total act of being born again in a purification of the soul through the Word of God, which endures forever. Therefore! lay aside all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, evil speaking (I’ll go on with.. evil shows, music, movies, words, news) and instead, desire God’s word so you can grow.

This reminds me of the verses:

Be simple to what is evil and wise to  what is good
(Romans 16:9)

So you must commit you soul to Him, your faithful creator, in doing good
(1Peter 4:18)

There is NO DOUBT that life is full of temptations everywhere we turn. Even though we have died to sin through Christ’s death and resurrection, sin still stands at the door with enticing sweetness yet hidden so deceitfully is the stench of death . As Jesus said: the way to life is narrow, it is difficult and few people find it. The road to death is wide and broad (easy way) (Matthew 7 and Luke 13)

For I am the Lord who brought you up out of the land of Egypt to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy. Lev 11:45

So, I tell you as the Lord warned Cain in Gen 4;6-7, If you don’t do what is right, sin lieth at your door, it desires you rule you, but you must rule it. Sin wants to control you, rule you, devour  you, reign with a power over you.

In Baptism:

  1. You are joined with Christ
  2. You died and were buried with Him
  3. United now with Christ in His death and raised to new life with Him
  4. Sin no longer has power over you
  5. You are no longer a slave to Sin, you have been set free from the Power of Sin
  6. You have the ability to live a NEW LIFE under the freedom of God’s grace
  7. Your old sinful way was crucified and put to death

just as Jesus died once to break sin’s power, and now He lives for the Glory of God,

  • we too, must live for Him
  • give ourselves completely to God
  • we must not give into our sinful desires (yes, they may still be there)
  • do not let your body be an instrument of sin – don’t let your mouth, eyes, hands, feet, ears become instruments of sin – I’m going a step further and don’t let the way you dress, speak, etc.. become an instrument of sin either – God see’s our motives !

Sin is NO longer your master.

However, sin and the power of sin don’t take a nap because you’re saved and baptized.  The power of sin is still at work, remember satan is god of this world, and this sin/power wants to destroy you. It’s not all over after you say the sinners prayer.  Yet God has given you everything to be victorious,

For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power.  But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ. So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.
1 Corinthians 15:57-58

(Posts on spiritual warfare: 1- Shoes of peace, Eph 6:13  2- Eph 6: Put on your armor, 3-Eph 6: Put on the belt of truth  4- Eph 6, know your enemy  5- Eph 6 Armor of God new discoveries )

Now that the Holy Spirit is in you, live a life that does not grieve Him. The Holy Spirit is like a best friend but even greater. He will never leave you.  He will guide you, comfort you and direct you, but when you don’t obey, it grieves  and saddens Him greatly.  This is because the Holy Spirit wants what is best for you, He directs you according to the Father’s will and cares deeply for you.

So it’s up to you.

You become a slave to whatever you obey

Remember the term slavery is used as an illustration to help us , in our human weakness, to understand this concept.

You can be a slave to righteousness or a slave to sin

You can set your foot on the difficult narrow path to life that few find or you can easily jump on the wide broad easy path that leads to death.

The freedom of Gods’ grace and the gift of the Holy Spirit are given to us as free gifts,  but for what?  So we can get salvation and keep on sinning? Did Christ die for nothing? Can we keep doing everything we desire? No, these great gifts given to us because God wants us to become HOLY!

Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord Hebrews 12: 14

I know, weird concept, me? be holy? be perfect? YES.  I know church likes to bring people in with “no perfect people” marketing, but the reality is, that Jesus told us to be perfect as He is perfect (Matthew 5). We are to be holy as He is holy. (1 Peter 1:16, Lev 21:8) He will make us Holy. Not many will tell you that, but don’t let this message scare you away. Think about it, what an amazing life goal. What? give up on anger? malice? deceit? hate? greed? impatience? lying? evil words? watching filth? lusts of the flesh? Is there really a sin you want to cling to? The devil wants you to think this goal of being righteous and holy is a boring life, but this is a LIE! God wants you to live in abundance, in joy, in peace- yes, even in difficult times, hope and eternal life lie ahead.  You must continue to fight the good fight

run from all these evil things. Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.  Fight the good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you, which you have declared so well before many witnesses.
1 Tim 6:11-12

Work hard to show the results of your salvation,
obeying God with deep reverence and fear.

Phil 2:12

The Lord isn’t an evil master beating you down reminding you of all your sins. He gives you His Holy Spirit who is kind and gentle. He will lovingly convict your heart of things you need to change and eliminate from your life. He will not condemn you nor will he crush you, but gently take you by the hand and show you the way to go. You never need to fear.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Eph 2:8-9

Paul gives us Steps of Salvation in the THE BOOK OF ACTS:
1-BELIEVE IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST- FAITH
2-CONFESS YOUR SINS AND REPENT
3-TURN BACK TO GOD- He wants you to SEEK HIM – TURN FROM YOUR WICKED WAYS
4-BE BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST-WASHING AWAY YOUR SINS
5-PROVE IT BY THE WAY YOU LIVE
6-GET RID OF ALL SIN AND WICKEDNESS
7-WATCH OUT FOR FALSE TEACHERS AND WOLVES IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING

Be aware of the enemies lies. Remember:

  • You are worthy ( who you are in Christ)

  • You are loved

  • You are chosen

The Lord desires to be with you, to walk with you and be one with Him and in Him building up the temple of the Lord.

May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord fill you with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; May the Lord strengthen you  with all might, according to His glorious power.

Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
Matthew 5:48

Genesis 3

Genesis 3

Here the scene is set in the garden of Eden and it seems Eve is alone with the Serpent. I noticed that Eve started the conversation, in my mind, I always thought it was the Serpent. Who is the Serpent? We’re told in Revelation 12:9 and Revelation 20:2 that the Serpent of old, also known as the great dragon is called the devil and satan – who deceives the whole world. Secondly, what was the serpent (satan) doing in the garden? Let’s look at Job for a moment; Satan is before the Lord God and God asks him where he’s been and Satan replies ” From going to and fro on the earth and walking back and forth on it” The conversation goes on and satan mentions he’s watching Job, but Job has a wall of protection around him on every side. Satan roams the earth looking for someone to devour and that ‘s exactly what he was doing in the Garden as he was watching Eve.

Let’s look at this situation, Eve in the garden and see’s satan, she should have never opened a door to talk to this deceitful creature, but she did. (And we’re told that it was known that this creature was ” more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made”.) Take note here, don’t open doors of wickedness, don’t open doors to communicate with satan, it will lead to ruin. So here we are, satan is watching these two creations of God , he’s waiting and watching for an opportunity. To prove this, look at Genesis 4:6-7 when the Lord speaks to Cain “And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”  See that? Sin is waiting at the door. Back to our scene, the devil is there watching Eve look at the tree and Eve begins conversation. The devil knows exactly how to twist truth. With every hidden lie is some truth, so discernment is always needed. The serpent says : “You will not surely die.  For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”- The words are so deceitful, its truth but a lie. I say he’s like a wicked attorney who twists the truth. You must be well skilled and knowledgeable in God’s word to be able discern the lies of falsehood and false teachings .

We know what’s next, Eve takes the forbidden fruit, eats it and then gives it to her husband. For this mistake of Eve, the bible says women are not to teach or have authority over man. Read 1 Timothy 2:12 ” And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.  For Adam was formed first, then Eve.  And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. (She is allowed to teach, you’ll see that in Titus 2:3, but see the specifications in the scripture, and there are woman prophets) I’m not going into detail to explain this, the scripture is clear and understandable if you read and search for it.  If anything, the takeaway point is to be VERY careful NOT to be deceived – remember scripture tells us in the last days, even the elect may be deceived so keep yourself from wrong teachings – run from it.

I wonder if Eve could understand the concept of death or if she really knew what it was. Now Adam eats the fruit, at first I wondered if he knew, but in verse 12 it says he tells God what he ate , however in 1 Timothy 2:14 it says Adam was not deceived, so really I don’t know if he knew initially what he was eating. If he didn’t, wow, very uncool and sneaky of Eve. “ From this one man, sin entered the world and death through sin and death spread to all men, because all sinned” ( it entered and spread – why did they add spread? makes me wonder if other people were on the earth at this point and sin spread to all of them because of this sin) However! there is good news : For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many

Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—  (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.  Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.  But the free gift is not like the [e]offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.  And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification.  For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.) Romans 5: 12-17

When Eve ate the fruit, her eyes were not opened. It wasn’t until they both ate that  the eyes of both of them were opened and they knew they were naked. I think they had clothes of light before this and lost it, I have nothing to back that up , I don’t know, it’s just something I think may have been possible.

The curse Adam received was that the ground would now be very difficult to cultivate. Thorns and thistles would come forth and by the sweat of his face he will eat, in other words, things aren’t going to be so easy anymore. Work work work and get very little in return. Further on in the next chapter ,  the curse is furthered because of the sin of Cain- the ground would no longer yield for him – don’t know if it was on just him or all, but innocent blood pollutes the land so I think after Cain, farming was no longer yielding fruit or barely enough. You’ll see in later in Genesis, an interesting thing is said when Noah, a preacher of righteousness, is born :

Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and had a son.  And he called his name Noah, saying, “This one will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord has cursed. After he begot Noah, Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years, and had sons and daughters.  So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years; and he died.32 And Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah begot Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

and later, after the flood, Noah builds and altar and when the Lord smelled the aroma,  the Lord said in His heart ““I will never again curse the ground because of the human race, even though everything they think or imagine is bent toward evil from childhood. I will never again destroy all living things.  As long as the earth remains, there will be planting and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night.” Genesis 8

With the new start of Noah’s generation,  the land was no longer as cursed as it was.

After Adam and Eve ate the fruit, they sewed fig leaves to cover themselves and hid…..God is walking through the garden calling for them, can you imagine that? Such a close relationship to their maker!  God ends up cursing the snake – and says you are cursed more than the cattle -whoaaaa, the cattle are cursed? yes, it seems so. Going back to Gen 1 maybe the animals weren’t blessed like the fish, birds and mankind. Next, God curses Eve and its not good. Finally God cursed man “ Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying You shall not eat of it”

“Cursed is the ground for your sake;
In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.
18 Both thorns and thistles it shall [f]bring forth for you,
And you shall eat the herb of the field.
19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are,
And to dust you shall return

and after all this Adam names his wife Eve, again here I could be wrong, but because she didn’t have a specific name yet, I’m wondering if she fell into sin very soon after her creation.  Then God made tunics of skin for them and clothed them. So what do we see? An animal or animals are killed for them, it probably was the first death they experienced. God’s creation killed, and yet, we see God’s kindness towards them.

He punishes, but he still loves them.

So much is in these chapters, click here to read the Chapter.

But if you have doubts about whether or not you should eat something, you are sinning if you go ahead and do it. For you are not following your convictions. If you do anything you believe is not right, you are sinning. Romans 14:23

January 1 Daily Bible Genesis 1, Psalms 1, Proverbs 1, Matthew 1

I like to read the bible through each year, sometimes I read through start to finish and other times I use the Charles Stanley Life Principles Daily Bible which covers old testament, new testament, Proverbs and Psalms daily. I thought I’d share some of my thoughts, questions, wandering thoughts and notes as I read today’s scripture.

Genesis 1:1-2:25

1- Is Jesus mentioned in creation? We are told all things were made through Him. I think He is right here in Genesis 1 verse 3

Then God said, ” Let there be light, and there was light”  Where did the light come from, what was the source of this light?  I believe this light  was the Lord Jesus Christ according to the following scriptures:

There was light without the sun. We know that all creation was made through Christ (John 1:1-4 and Colossians 1:15-17) and In Him was life and the life was the light of men (John 1:4); we also know Jesus was the light of the world (John 1:9, 3:19,8:12). also in the end times Revelation 21:23 The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. Revelation 22:5 There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.

2- ” Let there be bright lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night and let them be for signs and seasons and days and years.” Not only did the Lord create the sun and stars, it seems also at this point in time, the Lord God created the seasons, planned the times and the signs to come.

3-Did you notice that all of creation on days 3, 5,6  -Birds, animals, sea creatures, humans, herbs, grass, fruit trees – all of these things are  living things. It makes me wonder if the sun, moon and stars are living things also. It’s a bizarre thought, but I wonder. Psalm 147:4 says he calls the stars by names , he gave a name to each of them, see also in Isaiah 40:26. The stars have names Job 9:9 says He made the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades. Job 38:31 Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades ,Or loose the belt of Orion? Also in Job, He commands the sun to shine. wondering …..

4- On day 5 God makes birds and fish and blessed them, On day 6, God made animals and then man and it says God blessed them to be fruitful and multiply, but it seems he only said that for man not the animals unless it was meant for both .  I looked it up online and some people think God can’t bless animals because some were unclean, but Im not convinced .The blessing was to multiply. It’s still a question some have……

Here’s a verse to think about – In Genesis 3, When God is cursing the serpent , He says : ” Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life” Some other versions write it as – cursed more than the cattle . So where the cattle cursed? It seems so

4- It seems that elements, minerals, and precious stones were already on the earth before creation. They are mentioned in Gen 2:11-12 so I’m guessing they were on earth prior the beginning of our era. How did gold get on earth? diamonds? I want to know.

He has made the earth by His power;
He has established the world by His wisdom,
And stretched out the heaven by His understanding.
16 When He utters His voice—
There is a multitude of waters in the heavens:
“He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth;
He makes lightnings for the rain;
He brings the wind out of His treasuries.” Jer 51:15-17

Psalms 1:1-7

I always remember Psalm 1 when I tell others and remind myself of the importance of the quality of character of the company we keep – our friends and who we hang out with. Do not stand with the ungodly, in the path of sinners or sit with scorners. ( For more info on the friends read Proverbs 13:20, 1 Cor 15:33, 2 Cor 6:14, Ps 141:4-5) If we are companions of fools, we’ll become a fool, bad company corrupts good character, do not be unequally yoked.  There’s a wonderful promise in Psalms 1 —- and the promise is that whatever you do, will prosper- but this promise does not stand alone, it is for those whose delight is in the law of the Lord, for those who meditate on his Words, Laws and His Ways day and night – not some worldly mediation that is worthless, but meditate on the powerful words of God. (God’s word is powerful Hebrews 4:12, Romans 1:6, 1 Pet 1:2-3, 2 Tim 3:16-17, Ps 119:105, Is 55:11) Not only are you promised to prosper in all you do, but you shall be like an unshakable tree along the river always bearing fruits (see also Jeremiah 1:7-8) That is really amazing, God asks us to do 2 things and offers us 2 great promises. Does this mean life will run perfectly- no, but in all you do God will strengthen you in Christ to endure all things (Phil 4:13) . We have trials, troubles and tribulations in life, but despite that , these promises hold true , remember what Isaiah 55 says ” So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” And all God’s words are yes and Amen.
Want to be successful in all you do? Put God first, meditate on his Words and delight in them.

Things to mediate on according to scripture : God’s law, precepts, The Lord, his works, His deeds, on His word,  “the glorious splendor of Your majesty, And on Your wondrous works”, the gifts He’s given you  (don’t meditate on annoying people and things you are angry about) and “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”

Proverbs 1:1-7 (This would be a prayer)

Do you want wisdom, instruction, knowledge, understanding, counsel, to understand deep things, riddles, wise words to receive justice, equity , to perceive words of understanding?

The beginning of all these blessings starts with the Fear of the Lord, this is the beginning of knowledge. You have to search for it to understand it. The more you give to learning, the more you will receive and the less you give to it, even what you know will be taken from you – it’s in the scripture, search for it.

Matthew 1:1-25
Women mentioned in Genealogy of Jesus from Abraham to Jesus
1- Tamar – the wife of Jacobs 1st son, 2nd son, and got swindled out of marriage to the last son so she tricked and deceived Jacob, her father in law, pretending to be a prostitute and long story short, she had twins by old Jacob , their names were Perez and Zerah
2-Rahab, who married Salmon and had Boaz,  who was the great grandfather of David. Rahab was a prostitute in Jericho who  helped save the Jewish people and in return, they saved her life and her family. The scripture calls her a faithful woman and a woman justified by her works. This reminds me of the verse that says love covers a multitude of sins 1 Peter 4:8
3- Ruth, a Moabite – Moabites were enemies of Israel. She was a faithful woman to her widowed mother in law and married Boaz, they had a son named Obed who was the grandfather of David
4- the wife of Uriah, we know her name, it’s in the Scripture, but the author of Matthew refused to mention her by name. She married David and had a son named Solomon, but here she is still known as wife of Uriah, giving honor and remembrance to this man and the unjust death he suffered..
5- Mary, wife of Joseph of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

All things were created through Him and for Him.  And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
