I thought I’d share some ways I memorize things and some challenging (hopefully?) trivia below.
Do you know the 10 plagues that were sent down on Egypt when Moses went to Pharoah? See if you can memorize them (review for no more than a minute) and test yourself.
- Water turned into blood
- Plague on all livestock
- Boils on the people of Egypt
- 3 days of darkness
- Firstborn son of every family (including livestock) dies
Okay, how did you do? missed 4? No problem- we can fix this. Read this paragraph below, in it are all the plagues in order – after you’re done reading the paragraph, test yourself again and see if you can remember them all in order- You will have them all memorized!
When the water in Egypt turned to blood many of the frogs died and even more escaped and filled the land. Out of the rotting dead frogs came gnats and flies, they flew over the livestock and caused a great plague among all the animals, then they flew over the people and caused many to die from sickness. The people refused to listen to God and blasphemed His name, so the Lord God sent a great hailstorm to destroy everything in the land and what wasn’t destroyed – God sent locusts to eat everything that remained. In dread and silence, the people sat for three days in darkness and after that the first born male in every family died.
Now can you name the 10 plagues in order? Try it!
(side note: there is a deeper message in these 10 plagues, I just know it. I can’t quite figure it out, but the order and the individual plagues are no mere coincidence. Look at the 3 days of darkness, it reminds me of the 3 hours of darkness when Jesus was on the cross; then next the firstborn son dies- just like Jesus dies. You have to wonder if there is a message in this order. The boils over the people of Egypt remind me of the punishment Israel received when King David took the census and caused a plague to kill everyone. Could the locusts, as we are told in revelation, mean evil spirits who destroy? If so, the locusts could represent the captivity of Judah and Israel by Assyria and Babylon. Frogs in revelation also represent evil spirits- could that represent the time before Noah? Or when Eve took the fruit? Then we have the water turning in to blood- too many thoughts on that-but I know there are more layers to this than just the words)
10 commandments- Who knows the 10 commandments? sure we all do! However, when I stop to try to remember all of them, I am always short 2,3 or maybe 4. So let’s review
2- “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
3- “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
4- “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
5- “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
6- “You shall not murder.
7- “You shall not commit adultery.
8- “You shall not steal.
9- “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
10- “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.
Okay, if you don’t have them memorized in order, try this reading this story. Each command is written in some way in the paragraph below, when you remember the story, you can remember the commands in order too.
Once there was a woman who worshipped the Lord God, she made sure she put no god before Him, nor any idols. One day she went to her Father and Mother’s house, she wanted to warn them of the dangers of using God’s name in vain. It was Sabbath so they were resting and sitting around talking. Her sister mentioned the local news about a man who murdered his mistress because she had stolen his wallet and lied to him and told him that someone else stole it. So he killed her because he secretly wanted his neighbor and all her inheritance.
Okay – so it’s morbid, but so is the news. Now try to see if you know all the ten commandments:
- Worship the Lord your God
- Have no idols before Him
- Do not use His name in vain
- Honor your Father and Mother
- Honor the Sabbath
- Do not murder
- Do not commit adultery
- Do not steal
- Do not bear false witness
- Do not covet
CAIN AND ABEL- WHO KILLED WHO?
I could never remember which one killed his brother- so now I remember- Cain killed his brother with a cane and Abel just wasn’t able to fight back.
Matthew 5- The Beatitudes
My children memorized the beatitudes:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me
It helped when we remembered that there were 4P’s, 3M’s and one H
Poor, Peacemakers,Persecuted,Pure, Merciful, Meek, Mourn, Hunger
Here’s another example I use with my children:
Psalm 3:7-8 : Arise O Lord! Rescue me, my God! Slap all my enemies in the face! Shatter the teeth of the wicked! Victory comes from you O Lord, May you bless your people.
When I teach my kids, we use actions when we memorize a verse. When we say Arise O Lord, we stand up and lift our arms. Rescue me , my God – we pretend we are pulling someone from the sea. Slap all my enemies in the face – that’s an easy action, Shatter the teeth of the wicked , we show our teeth. For Victory comes from you- we raise our hands like we just won a soccer game- or show muscles, O Lord, May you bless your people- We look up to the heavens and ask for the Lords blessing;
WHO AM I???
I didn’t listen to my parents and married a Canaanite woman. I broke a promise I made to my daughter in law. I had 5 sons, but two were so wicked, God killed them. After my wife died, I had a very short-term affair with a shrine prostitute. (and I didn’t have the money to pay her) I tried to kill my daughter in law for the same sin I myself was guilty of….
Still don’t know? My grandpa was a real swindler and my mom wasn’t the prettiest lady. I was the youngest son of my mother and I hated my brother with a passion however I credit myself for his life because it was I who suggested we sell him instead of kill him- but later I found myself at his mercy begging to be his slave in Egypt.
Descendants who came from me were the shelanite clan from my youngest son of my Canaanite wife, perezite and zerahite clans from my twins I had from my widowed daughter in law- who I had sworn to my youngest son but she tricked me, but she was right. Hezronites and hamulites were subclans of my son Perez. My father’s blessing over me was: that my brothers would praise me and I will grasp my enemies by the neck , my relatives will bow before me as I am like a young lion that just finished eating its prey. For the scepter and ruling staff shall never depart from me until the coming of the one of whom it belongs . The nations will honor him and his clothes are washed in wine.
Here’s another one:
Who am I?
(Is it a person, character trait, thing, description? word? I’m not saying the answer is a person – but rather a Word? a gift? I did my best to keep the scriptures right – not taking them out of context, ….. I’m just putting the pieces of the puzzle togther)
By me, you are saved through faith.
I came through Jesus Christ.
I was given to each one of you according to the measure of Christ’s gift
You can come boldy to my throne to find Mercy
Rest your hope fully on me, who will be brought to you at the revelation of Christ
I was upon the Lord Jesus when He was growing up in childhood
The law came through Moses, but I came through Jesus Christ
You received me for obedience to the faith among all the nations for His name
You are justified freely by me through the redemption that is in Jesus Christ
I am a gift of God to you and I am given according to the measure of the gift of Christ
I bring salvation and justification
I am also known as a Spirit

(My daughter showed me this video, they all love this song. When she saw I posted it here, she insisted I give her credit for it, so there)
Peace be with you! Hey! Hopefully I can get back to posting more often, but as it is- I’ve just begun homeschooling my high schooler (pulled her out on day 3 of school this year), my computers are still not working right for me, trying to work part time and my husband is working from home- so AGH! So if I start posting crazy stuff like this, you know why. My life isn’t as quiet as it was last year and I’m in my pj’s until 5pm- leaving the house forgetting to put my shoes on and brushing my hair may be a thing of the past. If I start growing rasta dreads, somebody slap me, although I’m starting to think – they may look nice on me.
