Unlocking the Mystery of the Secret Place
When you pray to God the Father in the name of Jesus, you enter into the Holy of Holies, the Secret Place of the Most High. The only way we can enter is by the blood of Jesus.
The Bible promises a powerful truth in Psalm 91:1:
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
This “secret place” isn’t just a metaphor-it’s a spiritual reality, a place of divine protection, intimacy, and power. But what does it mean to enter this place, and how can believers experience God’s holy presence in prayer?
What Is the Secret Place of the Most High?
- A Real Spiritual Sanctuary: The secret place is not merely a mental exercise or a fleeting feeling. It’s described in Scripture as the Holy of Holies, the inner sanctuary of God Himself-a place where only those made pure by the blood of Jesus can enter
- A Place of Divine Encounter: In this sacred space, you stand before the throne of God, shielded from sin and filled with awe. Sin cannot exist here; it flees from His presence
How Do We Enter the Secret Place?
- Through Jesus Alone:
The only way to access this holy sanctuary is through faith in Jesus Christ. Hebrews 6:18-20 explains that Jesus has gone before us, leading us through the “curtain” into God’s inner sanctuary. He is our eternal High Priest, making a way for us to approach God with confidence Hebrews 4:14-16 - His Name John 16;23
- By Prayer and Repentance:
Jesus taught in Matthew 6:5-7 to pray in secret, away from public display, entering into a private place with God. True access comes through repentance, humility, and a sincere heart
Who Dwells in the Secret Place?
According to biblical study and reflection, those in the secret place include:
- Jesus Christ (at the right hand of the Father)
- God the Father
- Those with a contrite and humble spirit (Isaiah 57:15)
- 6 winged seraphim Isaiah 6
- Those whose hands and hearts are pure, who do not worship idols or tell lies (Psalm 24:3-4, Isaiah 57:15)) thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
- ps 24 Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, Nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive blessing from the Lord, And righteousness from the God of his salvation. This is Jacob, the generation of those who seek Him Who seek Your face. Selah
- Multitudes of angels and chariots of God (Psalm 68:17)
- The assembly of God’s firstborn, whose names are written in heaven (Hebrews 12:22-24)”No, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to countless thousands of angels in a joyful gathering. You have come to the assembly of God’s firstborn children, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God himself, who is the judge over all things. You have come to the spirits of the righteous ones in heaven who have now been made perfect. You have come to Jesus, the one who mediates the new covenant between God and people, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks of forgiveness instead of crying out for vengeance like the blood of Abel.”
- 20,000 chariots of God, even thousands of angels (Ps 68:17)

Where is the Secret Place?
- In Heaven:
The ultimate secret place is in the heavenly realms, before God’s throne - Above the Earth:
It is also described as being above the earth, where God can look down and see us, offering protection and deliverance (Isaiah 63:15, Psalm 32:7, Psalm 31:20)
What Happens in the Secret Place?
- Divine Protection: Hidden from the secret plots of man , the strife of tongues
God hides His people from trouble and surrounds them with songs of deliverance. - Preservation from troubles, surrounding us with songs of deliverance PS 32:7,31:20
- Revelation and Stillness:In this place, believers are called to “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10), experiencing His glory and hearing His voice
- Understanding of His great Holiness, Mercy and Power -too great for words to explain
- You are before the throne of God and a holy host too great to number
- The Lord has a place , a special place for you here, before His throne. There is a place for everyone living to come before Him, but sadly….. I saw that it was empty
No Sin Allowed:
Sin cannot remain in God’s presence. Entering the secret place requires repentance and cleansing through Jesus
The Importance of Preparation:
Only those cleansed by Jesus, with humble and repentant hearts, can stand in this place. It is a privilege and a gift, made possible by Christ alone
Biblical Descriptions of the Secret Place
- Ezekiel’s Vision:
Ezekiel described what he saw: ” I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of many waters, like the voice of the Almighty, a tumult like the noise of an army; and when they stood still, they let down their wings. A voice came from above the firmament that was over their heads; whenever they stood, they let down their wings. And above the firmament over their heads was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like a sapphire stone; on the likeness of the throne was a likeness with the appearance of a man high above it. Also from the appearance of His waist and upward I saw, as it were, the color of amber with the appearance of fire all around within it; and from the appearance of His waist and downward I saw, as it were, the appearance of fire with brightness all around. Like the appearance of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the brightness all around it. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. - Isaiah’s vision: Isaiah 6 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!” And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke.
- John saw the throne room of heaven Revelation 4-5
- There are many more, Moses also saw this Holy Place.
- Portals? I find it interesting that Moses entered through Mount Sinai. In the new testament, the 2 witnesses appeared on a mountain in the the transfiguration. Mount Olives, Mount Zion: But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, 24 to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel. Hebrews 12 I’m off track, but I wonder if there’s more to the mountains than we know
- Psalms and Prophets: The Psalms and prophets repeatedly mention God hiding His people in His sanctuary, sheltering them from evil, and lifting them up in times of trouble (Psalm 27:5, Psalm 150:1, Isaiah 57:15)
